UAE Accelerates Shift to Electric Vehicles: Experts Propose New Measures
Experts in the UAE are calling for additional steps—such as dedicated EV lanes on Sheikh Zayed Road—to speed up the transition to sustainable transport. The government aims for half of all vehicles in the country to be electric by 2050, but according to PwC, only about 15% are expected to be EVs by 2030. Heiko Seitz, PwC Middle East’s eMobility leader, stated that without significant legislative changes, reaching the 2050 target will be “virtually impossible.”
If the current pace continues, the UAE would need to triple the share of EVs over just two decades—boosting it by 1.75 percentage points annually. This is a major challenge, considering that EVs accounted for only 6% of new car sales last year, even though that was double the rate from the year before.
Despite the projected growth of the EV market to $16.3 million by 2030, the current adoption rate is not fast enough to meet long-term goals. To close the gap, the country must introduce new incentives, expand charging infrastructure, and adopt regulatory reforms that support the shift to sustainable mobility.
