Resumption of Jebel Ali Island Construction
In Dubai, construction work has resumed on one of the largest artificial islands in the region – Jebel Ali. This grand project, originally launched in 2002, remained frozen for many years due to the economic crisis of 2008. However, the emirate’s authorities decided to restart construction, aiming to complete it within a short timeframe by 2027.
The first reports about the project’s revival appeared at the end of 2023, when the Dubai government allocated significant financial resources for its development. However, active construction work began only recently. Newly released images from the Dubai Media Office show specialized vessels reclaiming land and reinforcing eroded sections of the island, while roads and other infrastructure elements are also being built.
Jebel Ali will be the largest artificial island of its kind in the UAE. Its total area will span 13.4 square kilometers, which is twice the size of Malé, the capital of the Maldives. The island’s coastline will extend for 110 kilometers. As part of Dubai’s Master Plan 2040, the island is expected to accommodate approximately 35,000 families.
The development of this project is focused on creating a comfortable and modern urban environment. In addition to residential areas, the island will feature tourism infrastructure, beach zones, parks, commercial spaces, and various entertainment facilities. The project’s completion is expected to significantly enhance Dubai’s appeal as a global hub for tourism and investment.
