Dubai to Launch Autonomous Taxi Trials with Uber and WeRide
Dubai is taking another major step toward a smart mobility future. The Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) has signed a strategic Memorandum of Understanding with Uber Technologies and WeRide — a global leader in autonomous vehicle (AV) technology. Under this agreement, pilot operations of self-driving taxis will begin in 2025. During the initial phase, the vehicles will include a safety driver, and rides will be available through the Uber app.
These trials are part of Dubai’s broader vision to introduce fully autonomous taxi services by 2026. The initiative supports the emirate’s ambitious goal of making 25% of all urban trips driverless by 2030. In addition to working with Uber and WeRide, RTA has also expanded partnerships with leading global AV platforms, including Baidu’s Apollo Go. Dubai continues to position itself as a global hub for testing next-generation transport technologies and smart infrastructure.
Mattar Al Tayer, Director General and Chairman of the Board of Executive Directors of RTA, emphasized that the introduction of autonomous vehicles aligns with the leadership’s vision to transform Dubai into the world’s smartest and most sustainable city. He noted that such innovations not only enhance convenience for residents and tourists but also contribute to improved road safety, reduced emissions, and more efficient urban mobility systems.
