Abu Dhabi Begins Testing Level 4 Autonomous Vehicles
Masdar City in Abu Dhabi has launched trials of Level 4 autonomous vehicles. This level of automation allows the vehicles to operate entirely on their own, but within a designated geofenced area. The project is being implemented in partnership with Solutions+ (a Mubadala company) and is supervised by the Integrated Transport Centre (ITC), ensuring full compliance with UAE safety standards and smart mobility regulations.
The trials are taking place along a dedicated 2.4 km route in Masdar City, connecting key locations such as the Siemens building, North Car Park, My City Centre Mall, and Central Park. Along the way, the vehicles pass notable landmarks including the IRENA headquarters and The Link business center. Initially, safety officers are present onboard, but control will gradually transition to a centralized remote operations center as the program progresses.
The project represents a key step in implementing the strategy of the Smart and Autonomous Systems Council (SASC) and further highlights Masdar City’s role as a hub for environmental and technological innovation. City officials and the ITC stated that this initiative demonstrates Abu Dhabi’s commitment to adopting the transport of the future and developing a regulatory framework to support autonomous mobility solutions.
