Trump Imposes 25% Tariff on Car Imports
Starting April 2, 2025, the United States will implement a new 25% tariff on imports of passenger cars and auto parts. President Donald Trump announced that the measure is aimed at protecting the American automotive industry and bringing jobs back to the country. The tariff will apply to both fully assembled vehicles and key components — including engines, transmissions, and electronics. No exceptions are planned, and Trump called the decision permanent.
The new initiative has sparked negative reactions from U.S. trade partners. European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen expressed regret, while Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney described the tariff as a direct blow to the auto industry and a violation of the USMCA agreement. Japan has also not ruled out retaliatory steps. Canadian authorities are already considering reciprocal measures against the American auto industry.
Critics argue that the tariff will lead to higher car prices and reduced affordability for consumers. Analysts estimate that the cost of certain models could rise by thousands of dollars. However, supporters of the initiative believe it will encourage companies to relocate production to the U.S. Trump has also promised to introduce a new tax deduction for auto loans — but only for vehicles made in America.
