In Sharjah, renewing a vehicle's registration requires an inspection, payment of fines and can be done online or at service centres.
Car registration in Sharjah
Renewing your car registration in Sharjah is an annual mandatory procedure that allows you to legally drive a vehicle and avoid fines. Before applying, you must undergo a technical inspection at a certified center. The inspection process includes diagnostics of the brake system, suspension, headlights, tires and the general condition of the car. It usually takes about 45 minutes and costs around 150-170 dirhams.
To successfully renew, the driver must have an Emirates ID, a valid driving license, proof of insurance, previous Mulkiya card and a vehicle inspection report. All fines must also be paid in advance via the portals of the Ministry of Interior (MOI), EVG, Sharjah Police website or directly at service centers. The registration itself will cost approximately AED 350-400, depending on the car and any additional fees.
Registration can be extended either in person at service centers (Tasjeel, Happiness Centers) or online — via official websites or mobile applications. In the case of an online application, the driver uploads documents, pays the fee, and then receives a new Mulkiya by mail. The production period is up to 5 working days.
A grace period of 30 days is granted after the expiry of the registration. Failure to renew within this period will result in a fine of Dh500.
It is also worth noting that since 2025, a single registration fee has been in effect in the UAE — 350 dirhams, plus 10 dirhams for innovation and information fees. If you keep the number plate, you pay an additional 35 dirhams. The fee may depend on the engine size — for example, registering a sedan with a 2.0 engine will cost about 440 dirhams.
There are benefits for owners of electric cars: they pay 20-30% less for technical inspection, and the registration itself can be issued for a longer period - up to 18 months. In addition, some new service centers are connected to the blockchain system, which ensures reliable protection of personal data of car owners.
Locals recommend synchronizing the validity of insurance and registration. Since car insurance in the UAE is valid for 13 months, this gives an extra month to calmly pass the technical inspection and submit documents for renewal without fines and haste.
