UAE Implements Biometric Identification to Replace Physical ID Cards
Over the next year, the UAE plans to fully implement biometric technologies that will replace physical Emirates ID cards. The Federal Authority for Identity, Citizenship, Customs and Port Security (ICP) has announced the successful development and testing of an advanced identification system that eliminates the need for a physical card. The new system leverages facial recognition and artificial intelligence technologies and is accessible via the ICP’s mobile application. It does not replace existing identity systems but enhances them, improving security, accuracy, and user convenience.
The biometric solution will be adopted across key sectors where secure and accurate identification is essential — including government, banking, telecommunications, healthcare, hospitality, and insurance. To ensure data protection, the system complies with strict technical and procedural standards aligned with national data privacy laws and risk management frameworks. The announcement was made in response to a question raised by Dr. Adnan Hamad Al Hammadi, a member of the Federal National Council, regarding the promotion of electronic identity solutions to improve service efficiency.
