New UAE Traffic Law from March 2025: Driving Allowed from Age 17!

The United Arab Emirates (UAE) has implemented a new federal decree-law on traffic regulations, significantly updating existing rules to align with modern trends and global standards in transportation. One of the most notable changes is the reduction of the minimum age for obtaining a driver's license to 17 years, offering young people more opportunities for mobility and independence. This move could also positively impact the development of transportation infrastructure and help prepare young drivers to follow traffic rules from an early age.

Additionally, the new law covers modern forms of personal transportation, such as e-bikes and e-scooters. Given the growing popularity of these vehicles, especially in urban areas, incorporating them into traffic regulations will help streamline their use, enhance safety on roads and sidewalks, and reduce the number of accidents. It is expected that owners of such vehicles will be required to follow specific rules, possibly including mandatory protective gear and speed limits in certain zones.

The new decree also introduces stricter penalties for both drivers and pedestrians. The imposition of tougher sanctions aims to reduce the number of violations and improve road safety. Drivers may face higher fines, temporary or permanent license suspensions for serious offenses, as well as increased enforcement of speed limits and seat belt use. Pedestrians, in turn, may be required to cross roads only at designated areas and obey traffic signals, which should help reduce the number of accidents involving them.
