How to Drive a Mortgaged Car from the UAE to Oman: Key Rules Every Driver Should Know
Путешествие в Оман на автомобиле, находящемся в залоге, может обернуться неожиданными трудностями. Travelling to Oman in a car under loan can bring unexpected challenges. If you plan to drive your own mortgaged vehicle, it’s essential to obtain a No Objection Certificate (NOC) from your bank in advance. One driver, who faced this requirement at the border in December 2024, was asked to pay a deposit equal to the remaining loan amount plus a 2% fee and wait three working days for the NOC to be issued. This caused an unexpected delay and stress.
Most banks require an NOC when crossing the border in a financed vehicle. In addition to the certificate, you may also need valid Oman insurance, your vehicle registration, and a driving licence. Border points such as Hatta (Al Wajajah) strictly enforce these requirements, but similar rules may apply at other crossings like Dibba, Al Darah, and Meyzad. To avoid issues, it’s best to confirm the requirements with both your bank and border officials in advance.
An alternative is renting a car with cross-border permission to Oman. These rental vehicles are usually insured and come with all the necessary documentation, including an NOC. Companies like Dollar and Thrifty offer dedicated "Oman-ready" packages, saving clients time and hassle. If you still plan to drive your own car, make sure your insurance includes Oman coverage. Otherwise, you can purchase the “Orange Card” insurance at the border — a five-day third-party policy that covers damage to others only.
