How to Avoid Speeding Fines After Speed Limit Reductions in Abu Dhabi

With the recent reduction of speed limits on some roads in Abu Dhabi, drivers are urged to adjust their driving habits to avoid unexpected fines. These changes are part of a broader initiative to enhance road safety and reduce the number of serious traffic accidents across the emirate. If you regularly drive in Abu Dhabi, it's important to know how to stay within the legal limits and drive responsibly on the roads.

In April, new speed limits were introduced on two key highways in Abu Dhabi: Sweihan Road (E20) had its speed limit reduced from 120 km/h to 100 km/h, while Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed International Road (E11), which connects Abu Dhabi Industrial City to Sheikh Shakhbout Medical City, saw its speed limit drop from 160 km/h to 140 km/h. These changes are part of Abu Dhabi’s ongoing efforts to improve road safety, especially on high-traffic corridors where accidents had been more frequent.

A key difference in Abu Dhabi is the absence of a 20 km/h buffer, which is applied in other emirates. This rule was removed in 2018, meaning that now even exceeding the speed limit by just 1 km/h could result in a fine through speed cameras. To avoid fines, it is crucial to follow the posted speed limits precisely, pay attention to road signs, and use navigation apps with speed alerts to stay informed.
