BYD Overtakes Tesla in Europe: The Start of a New Race for Leadership

Chinese automaker BYD has, for the first time, surpassed Tesla in electric vehicle sales across Europe — a shift analysts are calling a turning point for the EV market. According to data from JATO Dynamics, BYD sold 7,231 electric cars in EU countries in April, narrowly edging out Tesla, which sold 7,165. While the gap is still small, the significance is clear: Tesla had long held the top spot in the region, whereas BYD only recently began its aggressive expansion into the European market.

The growth of Chinese brands has become the main engine behind the European EV market, which grew by 28% in April alone. Despite the imposition of higher tariffs, demand for Chinese vehicles rose by 59%, with BYD showing an impressive 169% increase. Another standout was Xpeng, which saw a staggering 268% surge in sales — a spike analysts attribute to a previously low sales base.

Experts point to several reasons for the decline in Tesla’s momentum. One key factor is the political activity of Elon Musk, which has negatively impacted the company’s image and contributed to a 62% drop in sales in Germany during Q1. Additionally, a temporary production pause for the updated Model Y, coupled with consumer uncertainty, has led many potential buyers to wait for new versions — either a more affordable model or the high-performance flagship, the Model Y Performance.
