What is an IDP

International Driving Permit in Dubai
International Driving Permit (IDP) is an official supplement to a National Driving License (NDL), issued in the form of an A6-format booklet. It provides translations of driver information into multiple international languages and confirms the holder’s right to drive vehicles outside their home country.

The International Drivers Association (IDA) issues IDPs translated into 11 major world languages. Each document features a durable rubberized gray cover with water-resistant properties, a holographic security seal, the official IDA stamp, and complies with the requirements of both international “Road Traffic” Conventions. This allows the document to be valid in over 180 countries worldwide.

According to the Law of the Republic of Kazakhstan “On Road Traffic” (Chapter 11, Article 73, Clause 9) and the Vienna Road Traffic Convention, the maximum validity period of an IDP is 3 years, but it cannot exceed the expiration date of the national license.

The IDP is officially recognized by road authorities in the most popular travel destinations, including Austria, UAE, Sri Lanka, Thailand, Italy, Switzerland, South Korea, USA, France, Germany, and many others.

IDA IDP Standards:

  • Mandatory official round stamp of IDA;
  • Holographic seal verifying authenticity;
  • Indication of the issuing country and its code;
  • Unique identification number registered in the Central IDA Database;
  • Validity period — up to 3 years or until the NDL expires (whichever comes first);
  • Date of issue;
  • NDL number (as stated in the application);
  • Vehicle categories in accordance with the NDL;
  • Full name, place and date of birth, address (as per application);
  • Applicant’s photograph;
  • Signature sample;
  • QR code for real-time verification in the Central IDA Database.

Purpose of the IDP

An IDP allows its holder to legally drive and rent vehicles in countries that have signed international conventions, regardless of their nationality.

Important: The IDP is not valid and cannot be used within the country of citizenship or residence of the holder.

The Tourist Identification Card issued by the International Drivers Association confirms the issuance of an IDP and registration in the Central IDA Database. This card can be presented in partner networks or non-governmental organizations when necessary.

National Driving License (NDL) is the primary government-issued document granting the right to operate specific vehicle categories.
